Cottage Park

A pocket park neighborhood tucked into the curve of West
Broadway Avenue, Cottage Park is at the center of exciting
community investment.
Project Area
The Cottage Park cluster includes the properties adjacent
to Cottage Park on James Avenue North and Ilion Avenue
North.
Vision and Recent News
Dramatic changes are underway in Cottage Park! The community
park that anchors this neighborhood was completely revitalized
in 2006, including new landscaping, plantings, lighting,
and art. The Ackerberg Group has completed construction on
two beautiful new homes that overlook the park. One home
was sold to a long-time northsider and the other is occupied
by the Jordan Area Community Council. Cluster partners are
continuing to invest in Cottage Park. New construction of
two homes was completed by the Greater Metropolitan Housing
Corporation in 2008 and additional homes will be built and
rehabbed. The Ackerberg Group and Franklin Bank worked with
the congregation of Garden of Gethsemane Ministries to rehab
the historic church overlooking the park and open
its doors again for worship.
Cottage Park cluster partners, including volunteers from
The Ackerberg Group, The Pohlad Family Foundation, The Jordan
Area Community Council, the City, the Northside Home Fund,
members
of the Garden of Gethsemane Church, and residents helped
to install new playground equipment in Cottage Park. The
Department of Public Works also installed speed humps around
the park to slow traffic and improve safety. With the support
of The Pohlad Family Foundation, the SPEAK Project worked
with youth, primarily from Jordan, to create an art bench
to replace a park board bench that was stolen from near the
playground.

Church of Gethsemane re-opens in North Minneapolis
By Sheila Regan , TC Daily Planet
After being vacant for over a decade, a church in the Cottage
Park area of the Jordan neighborhood in Minneapolis is finally
opening its doors. The Church of Gethsemane, a non-denominational
congregation, bought the building in 2003, but has had difficulty
securing funding for renovations. Finally, after a little
help from Catalyst Community Partners, a nonprofit group,
the congregation was able to have a simple Christmas Eve
service in the nearly finished building, and will have an
opening ceremony on January 11 at 10:30 a.m., followed by
a reception at Urban League in North Minneapolis.
