Hawthorne
Eco Village

The
Hawthorne EcoVillage is named for the partners’ commitment
to a community that is both ecologically friendly and,
through the incorporation of energy efficient appliances
and buildings,
economically affordable over time.
Project Area
The Hawthorne EcoVillage is a four block area bounded by
Lowry Avenue on the north, 30th Avenue on the south, Lyndale
Avenue on the west, and 4th Street on the east.
Vision and Recent News
The Hawthorne EcoVillage is GOING GREEN! With funding from
The Home Depot Foundation, a demonstration project is underway
in the Hawthorne neighborhood that can be replicated using
best practices in community-based development, neighborhood
revitalization, and sustainable green building and landscaping.
Through this process we will help transform a four block
area into a green, healthy neighborhood. HACC, Tree Trust,
PPL, and our supporters in this project will provide the
necessary tools to empower residents to help design, create,
and maintain the project. The goal is to create a sustainable
green neighborhood—inside and out!
EcoVillage Tree Nursery
The EcoVillage partners planted approximately 30 trees in
a tree nursery on a vacant lot. The trees will be cared
for and cultivated by neighborhood residents until they
can be planted permanently throughout the EcoVillage and
surrounding Hawthorne neighborhood. A ceremonial tree planting
event was attended by Mayor Rybak, Council Member Hofstede,
and neighborhood leaders and residents. Click

Hawthorne Neighborhood Sues a National Lender
The Hawthorne neighborhood recently settled a lawsuit that
they filed against CitiMortgage for negligent and improvident
lending related to a property in the EcoVillage. In 2007
CitiMortgage issued a mortgage on the property for $235,000
which was nearly double the appraised value. The property
was never occupied and soon went through foreclosure and
became boarded and condemned. The neighborhood filed the
suit to gain control of the property at a fair value, and
as a result of the settlement was able to acquire the property
in August of 2008 for approximately $18,900.
